A new, European model of Identity Card will be introduced in Moldova from 2025, with which citizens will be able to travel abroad.
This decision was adopted by the government at a meeting on Wednesday. The new model of identity cards will gradually replace the previously issued ones. The Cabinet said that, thus, Moldovan citizens will have an identification card (identity card), while foreign citizens, stateless persons, refugees and beneficiaries of humanitarian protection will have a resident card. The new documents, which will be issued from March 31, 2025, will be the size of a bank card and will include both printed information and biometric data - the image of the owner's face and fingerprints. This fact will allow expanding the list of EU countries where Moldovan citizens will be able to travel on the basis of the ID card. Also, the new law will facilitate digital interaction of people with state institutions and access to banking, tax, social and educational services. The identification card, a new-style ID card, will no longer contain information on residence and temporary residence to avoid the need to change the document frequently. Also, the new ID cards will no longer have an insert and on Election Day the information will be entered electronically, without a stamp. Moreover, citizens will be required to have an ID card from the age of 14, instead of 16 as they are now, in order to increase access to social services offered to their holders. The government-approved bill will be submitted to Parliament for consideration and approval. // 06.03.2024 - InfoMarket
