Almost 0.5 million pounds, confiscated by the UK from Luca Filat, the son of the former Prime Minister of Moldova, will be used to support people with disabilities in Moldova.
This is provided for by a Memorandum of Understanding between the governments of Moldova and Great Britain on the return of illegal funds confiscated from the son of former Prime Minister Vlad Filat - Luca Filat - by the decision of the British courts. The corresponding document was signed by the Minister of Labor and Social Protection of Moldova, Marcel Spatari, and the British Ambassador to Moldova, Steven Fisher. The agreement provides for the return of 458,068 pounds sterling confiscated from Luca Filat. The funds will be used to recruit more than 550 personal assistants for people with severe disabilities. The project will be managed by the National Agency for Social Assistance. “We are grateful for the support that the British side provided to the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of Moldova. The funds will be used to hire personal assistants for people with severe disabilities, in addition to the nearly 6,000 already available. This is definitely a step forward towards improving the living standards of vulnerable segments of the population,” said Marcel Spatari. The decision to use the funds confiscated from Luca Filat to support people with disabilities was first announced in May this year during a joint briefing in Chisinau by Moldovan President Maia Sandu and British European Neighborhood Minister Wendy Morton. The management of the returned funds will be monitored by Keystone Moldova, a civil society organization specializing in protecting the rights of people with disabilities. // 22.09.2021 - InfoMarket.
