Moldovan Prime Minister Ion Chicu has resigned from his post, which automatically entails the resignation of the entire government.
Ion Chicu announced his decision to resign at a briefing on Wednesday after a meeting with President Igor Dodon and Speaker of Parliament Zinaida Greceanîi, explaining the step he has taken by his intention to initiate the dissolution of parliament and snap elections. As noted by Ion Chicu, the issue of the government’s resignation as part of further steps to dissolve the parliament and achieve the declared priority goal of normalizing the situation in Moldova was discussed by him with the incumbent President and Parliament Speaker. The head of the Cabinet of Ministers clarified that on the eve, the government adopted many important projects for the implementation of budget laws and measures of the new fiscal policy, so that there are no problems with financing priority needs, and the state system will be able to function normally. “The documents adopted by the government the day before will make it possible to continue paying salaries and pensions, and now the time has come to focus on the dissolution of parliament, for which there are two legal ways; one of them is the resignation of the government. The time has come to launch the procedure for dissolving parliament and holding snap elections, so I resign today from the post of Prime Minister, which automatically entails the resignation of the entire government,” Ion Chicu said. He said that today he will hold discussions with President-elect Maia Sandu on the work of the current government.
