In Moldova, labels will contain more detailed information about products and their constituent substances or ingredients.
In particular, this is provided for by amendments to the Consumer Information Act on food products approved by Parliament. The document contains new measures to protect the rights of consumers so that they have more information about the composition of food products. The legislative initiative, developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, aims to create a regulatory framework that meets international standards and is designed to protect the health of consumers and guarantee their right to receive complete, reliable and transparent food information. The bill states that product labels must contain information about the presence of allergens, as well as the presence or absence of gluten in food. Also, if the country of origin or place of origin of the primary ingredient is not the country of origin or place of origin of the food, then the country of origin or place of origin of the primary ingredient(s) should be indicated; or a region or any other geographical area of a state well understood by the consumer. It is also stipulated that poultry/pork meat, meat products or meat products from poultry/pork meat containing more than 50% of meat originating from animals that have not been fed genetically modified feeds, as well as food eggs, must be accompanied by the label “Fed without genetically modified organisms” ” or “Fed without GMOs.” A legislative initiative by the Action and Solidarity Party, a group of deputies of the parliamentary faction, is currently in Parliament, providing for stricter regulation of the labeling of foods containing trans-fatty acids. Having considered both drafts in the first reading, the Commission on Agriculture and Food Industry proposed their consolidation for the second reading, given that both initiatives amend the Consumer Food Information Law. // 17.03.2023 — InfoMarket
