There are about 398.34 thousand tons of wheat, about 1.3 million tons of corn and 350 thousand tons of sunflower seeds in the warehouses of Moldova’s economic agents.
The Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry reported this, referring to the data of the permanent monitoring of grain stocks. In this regard, the Emergency Situations Commission decided the day before to extend the licensing period for importing wheat, corn and sunflower seeds for another 3 months in order to maintain stable domestic prices and help domestic producers benefit from their harvest and maintain their competitiveness. The decision is also aimed at liquidating existing stocks and preventing the creation of surplus production relative to domestic demand. Only legal entities or individuals engaged in economic activities in the production of oil and vegetable fats, flour milling products, preparations for feeding agricultural and breeding animals will be able to obtain a license to import grain. The application for an import license must be accompanied by documents justifying the need to replenish stocks. As noted by the Ministry of Agriculture, one of the main problems of the business environment in Moldova is the lack of links between grain producers and processors, and the formation of value chains without the participation of both parties is impossible. Thus, producers and processors need to build bridges of cooperation and negotiation. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry supports the development of local value chains. The ministry emphasizes that buying and processing local raw materials reduces logistics costs and provides an incentive for economic development in our communities. Dialogue between producers and processors is at the heart of business efficiency. The Agriculture Ministry said that no wheat has been imported to Moldova from October 2023 until today, except for seeds for sowing. A license was obtained for the import of about 1.5 thousand tons of sunflower seeds, of which 1.2 thousand tons are intended for the confectionery industry (varieties that are not grown in the country). In addition, a license was issued to import 44 tons of corn for popcorn. // 27.03.2024 - InfoMarket.
