Romania has announced a tender for the construction of the final section of the Unirii A8 motorway to the Moldovan border
As reported by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development of Moldova, Romania has launched a tender process for the construction of Section 4 of the Unirii A8 motorway - Târgu Neamţ - Iaşi - Ungheni. This project is of strategic importance and marks the first milestone in the construction of a motorway on Romanian territory. This strategic project, initiated by the European Union, Romania, and Moldova, marks a significant milestone for the country's infrastructure. The objective of the tender is to award a contract for the design and construction of the road section between DN24 (Iaşi) and the customs bridge over the Prut River in Ungheni, financed with European funds under the SAFE (Security Action for Europe) instrument, a new EU mechanism for strategic investments. Under the same contract, work will also be carried out in Moldova for a total cost of approximately €64 million, which will be fully covered by the Romanian side. The tender for the work is being conducted jointly with Romanian participants to ensure the technical and financial coherence of the project. The following works are envisaged in Moldova: construction of a motorway section approximately 4.7 km long, which will connect the bridge over the Prut River and the ring road near Ungheni, including a road junction, a railway crossing, and the existing ring road; construction of a connecting road approximately 1.1 km long between the motorway/ring road and the logistics center in Beresti; and development of the road infrastructure and equipment necessary for the operation of the logistics center in Beresti. "Thus, the Unirii A8 motorway will directly connect Romania with Moldova, opening up new opportunities for mobility, trade, investment, and regional development. This is a concrete step towards Moldova's infrastructure integration into European transport networks and towards strengthening relations between the two countries," the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development of Moldova emphasized.// 05.01.2026 — InfoMarket
