
Design of capital works on the Bender-Basarabeasca railway section in Moldova has been completed.
At the same time, the project for the Basarabeasca-Giurgiulesti section will be completed in the near future. This was announced by the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Andrei Spinu, who shared information on the progress of the rehabilitation of the railways of Moldova. He said that he traveled 230 km of the railway to see the progress of repair work on the Bender-Caushani-Basarabeasca-Etulia-Giurgiulesti section. As Andrei Spinu noted, at the moment the railway switches at the stations Cainari, Zloti, Cimislia, Basaraberasca, Abaclia, Ceadir-Lunga, Taraclia have been replaced, and they are planned to be replaced at the stations of Greceni, Vulcanesti and Etulia. 19,600 sleepers were also replaced. The Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development said he stopped at Etulia station and spoke with workers and visited the station's command center. “Everything is outdated, the traffic control systems are from the 70s. We plan to modernize these old systems. I thanked the railways workers of Moldova for their dedication and daily work. Together with European partners, we will bring our country’s railways to European standards. Together we are building a European Moldova!” the Minister wrote on his page on the social network. As previously reported by the InfoMarket agency, work on the modernization of the 233 km section of the Bender-Causeni-Basarabeasca-Etulia-Giurgiulesti railway is planned to be completed in 2025. The project is being implemented with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank. This is the busiest section of the railway in the country, providing transit of goods from Romania and Ukraine. The project involves major repairs of about 80 km and ongoing repairs of about 153 km of track. An open tender was organized for the reconstruction of the Bender-Causeni-Basarabeasca-Etulia-Giurgiulesti railway section. In 2020, the EBRD and the EIB recognized the company Temirzhol Zhondeu (Kazakhstan), part of the Komkor Management group of companies, as its winner. According to the terms of the contract, the company will restore and modernize a section of the railway with a length of 233 km. Once the project is completed, weight and speed restrictions can be lifted. For freight trains, the speed will increase to 90 km/h, and for passenger transport, the speed of trains may increase to 120 km/h.
