USAID is helping to develop a feasibility study for the creation of a multimodal logistics center in Moldova at the Bereşti railway station in the municipality of Ungheni.

This was reported by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, noting that, for the successful implementation of the said investment project, the Moldovan delegation made a study visit to Austria to visit the logistics terminals in Graz and Vienna. This trip, from June 3 to June 6, is part of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) support offered through the Moldova Institutional and Structural Reform Program (MISRA) to develop a feasibility study for the establishment of a multimodal logistics center at the Bereşti railway station in the city of Ungheni. The Moldovan delegation included representatives of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization, the Public Property Agency, the Office of the Prime Minister and the State Enterprise “Railway of Moldova”. The main purpose of the trip was to visit 2 logistics terminals in Graz and Vienna in order to learn best practices directly from the operators of these terminals and acquire a broader vision of the creation, operation, administration and development of this type of activity in Moldova. As noted by the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development Mircea Pascaluta, currently in Moldova there is no comprehensive logistics network that could offer a competitive alternative to road transport, and the feasibility study initiated by USAID MISRA will provide the government with a broad picture of the development of a multimodal logistics terminal that will connect all types of cargo transportation (land, container, general cargo). “The study visit to Austria is an important step in our efforts to ensure the effective and sustainable implementation of the investment project. This exchange of ideas with terminal operators contributes to a better understanding of the logistics aspects and operation of projects of this kind in Austria. By developing a multimodal logistics terminal in Ungheni, we will ensure the connection of our country to international transport corridors, and this step will also strengthen Moldova’s position as an important logistics hub in the region,” said Mircea Pascaluta. During the visit, the Moldovan delegation also held two important meetings in Vienna, at the Federal Chamber of Commerce and at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the purpose of which was to present the investment project to potential investors from Austria. In this context, representatives of Moldova emphasized the fact that the future logistics complex in Ungheni is an extremely attractive investment. The feasibility study will include a comprehensive analysis of the current situation in our country and region regarding the existing cargo transportation infrastructure, the possibility of developing a network connecting various terminals in the country and region, an assessment of costs and investment options, as well as the need to adjust the legal framework to support the development of such logistics terminal.// 06.06.2024 — InfoMarket
