The state-owned Railways of Moldova (CFM) transported more than 130 thousand tons of fuel oil in 2022-2023.
As noted in its report, in particular, fuel oil was transported from Romania - through the ports of Constanta and Galati and from Ukraine - through the port of Reni. The largest volume of fuel oil was transported in January and February - 52728 tons, and from August to December 2022, more than 64 thousand tons of fuel oil was transported. CFM reminded that last summer there were discussions about the risks that Moldova would remain without access to natural gas during the cold season, so the authorities decided that Termoelectrica should switch to fuel oil. The Emergencies Commission ordered that fuel oil should be transported as a priority by the state-owned Railways of Moldova within the limits of the available fleet of tanks and locomotives. The solutions had to be prompt and effective in order to be able to reach the destination because Termoelectrica required 30-40 thousand tons of fuel oil a month, and at that time CFM was only able to ship 8 thousand tons of fuel oil a month and, obviously, was not ready to provide the requested amount in full (due to the lack of the necessary number of tanks and platforms for fuel transportation to the border, lack of logistical experience in transportation of this type of cargo directly from the ports). Thanks to the efforts of CFM specialists, the situation was quickly rectified: railcars and platforms were urgently repaired, and thanks to cooperation with fuel oil suppliers, railcars from Ukraine were offered for lease. Thus, CFM transported more than 30,000 tons of fuel oil each month. In total, over 2,300 railcars were involved in fuel oil transportation. // 18.04.2023 – InfoMarket
