The EU will partially liberalize road freight transport with Moldova and Ukraine to help secure their supply chains.
In particular, the European Commission sent a proposal to the Council of the European Union to start negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine to conclude transport agreements on road freight transport between the EU and both countries to ensure food security in the region severely affected by military action. The European Commission proposes to liberalize road transport of goods, which would allow Ukrainian and Moldovan carriers to carry out transport operations in the EU, as well as transit through their territories. As noted, since traditional transport routes in the region are currently closed, the initiative aims to ensure supply chain security, including food security. Similarly, these actions will provide more opportunities for Moldovan carriers and freer access to the European economic market. European Commissioner for Transport Adina Valean said that the European Commission's proposed partial liberalization of road transport for Moldovan and Ukrainian carriers to the EU would allow Ukraine to shift important export goods from sea routes currently inaccessible due to Russian military aggression. The blockade of Black Sea ports has also negatively affected Moldova, which has lost important transport routes through Ukraine for its own exports. Measures being taken by the EU will allow Moldova to resume exports, which have been adversely affected by the blockage of Black Sea ports. The new agreements will be an emergency solution for the Moldovan and Ukrainian economies. "Our proposal will provide immediate relief to the economies of these two countries," Adina Valean said. She stressed that the European Commission is proposing more flexibility for road freight transport, allowing Ukrainian, Moldovan and European carriers to transit and work between each other's territories. In addition, the European Commission proposes that the driving licenses and certificates of professional compliance issued by Ukrainian and Moldovan authorities should be recognized in the EU. // 07.04.2022 - InfoMarket
