
About 8% of the employed population of Moldova in 2020 was affected by the pandemic crisis.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics’ survey of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the labor market, the restrictions introduced last year directly affected at least 68 thousand people. The greatest impact was registered in the second quarter, when one in four employed people reported that they were injured at work due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while the proportion of women affected by the crisis is significantly higher than that of men: 30.9% versus 18.5%. In general, the negative impact of the pandemic on women was more pronounced. Also, the restrictions that affected the labor market affected residents of urban settlements more than rural residents: 60.9% versus 39.1%. In terms of age groups, the most affected by the pandemic crisis were young people aged 25-34 (24% to 36%), aged 35 to 44 (14% to 28%) and aged 45 to 54 years old (from 18% to 23%). Least of all, the impact of the crisis was felt by the employed population under the age of 24 (on average, about 5.4% were affected). According to statistics, the service sector suffered the most from the pandemic: the crisis affected on average 78.3% of workers in this industry, and in the IV quarter - almost 94%. In the industrial sector, 13.8% of workers were affected, in construction - 5.9%, in the agricultural sector - about 2.1% of the employed population in this industry.
