The Constitutional Court of Moldova declared unconstitutional the law that provided for the return of the former Chisinau Republican stadium into state ownership and the abolition of the transfer of this plot into the United States’ ownership for the construction of a new embassy.
This decision was adopted by the judges of the Constitutional Court on Thursday after considering the request of the former MPs from the parties Platform "Dignity and Truth" (DA), the Democratic Party and the party "Action and Solidarity" (PAS), who challenged the law. At the same time, earlier the Constitutional Court by its decision suspended the operation of this law pending consideration of the issue on the merits. In addition, the Constitutional Court did not accept for consideration the request of the PSRM MPs on the legality of transferring the territory of the former Republican stadium for the construction of a new building for the US Embassy. According to the chairperson of the Constitutional Court Domnica Manole, the decision taken today is final and not subject to appeal. On December 3, 2020, MPs from the PSRM and the For Moldova platform adopted the aforementioned law. They announced that the law on the repayable transfer of the said property to the American side for the construction of a new complex of the US Embassy in Moldova in Chisinau has expired. The adopted law specified that the territory of the former Republican stadium is returned into the state's ownership, and only sports and cultural facilities can be built on this site. At the same time, representatives of the For Moldova platform stated that, thus, the first step was taken towards the implementation of a project to build on this plot of land a large-scale sports and entertainment complex and a family recreation park MoldovaLand or BasarabiaLand. Earlier, the American Embassy in Moldova said that the United States is disappointed and criticizes the adoption by the Moldovan Parliament on December 3, 2020 of a law repealing the law that allowed selling the territory of the former Republican Stadium to the United States for the construction of a new American embassy building. // 29.07.2021 – InfoMarket
