In Moldova, in 2023-2025, distribution network operators received 35 thousand smart electricity meters, and by the end of 2026, they will install another 25 thousand devices from the second batch for consumers - Ministry of Energy
This was announced by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy Cristina Pereteatcu at a meeting with representatives of the Italian government and energy and environment experts from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, with whom she discussed the progress and further prospects for the implementation of the smart electricity metering program. The discussions took place as part of a visit to Moldova by an Italian delegation, whose members visited Premier Energy and RED-Nord, as well as households that benefit from smart meters with remote reading of electricity consumption. Smart meters are installed in special boxes located on the street, which makes it easy to check their readings without disturbing residents. In addition to the technical aspects of the actual installation of these modern meters, the discussions also covered important topics for the development of a modern digital infrastructure in the energy sector, including cybersecurity, the integration of collected data with billing platforms and the implementation of strategies to change consumer behavior. Cristina Pereteatcu highlighted the valuable support provided by the Italian Government and UNDP, key partners in the digitalization of the national energy system. She noted that digitalization is crucial for the energy sector, as it ensures efficiency, cost reduction and a cleaner and more sustainable energy system, helps integrate renewable energy sources, increases the reliability of networks and facilitates the development of new business models. The working visit to Balti also included a meeting with RED-Nord CEO Iurie Beşliu, as well as talks with Moldovan engineers and international experts involved in the project. The Ministry of Energy notes that in 2023-2025, 35,000 smart meters were delivered to distribution network operators, which are currently being installed across the country. A second batch of 25,000 such smart devices is planned to be installed by the end of 2026. The pilot project is being implemented by the Ministry of Energy in partnership with donors and international organizations. //26.05.2025 – InfoMarket.
