An ambitious project of a new electric interconnection between Moldova and Romania through the 400 kV Balti-Sucava transmission line was presented in Brussels.
The Ministry of Energy and Moldelectrica state enterprise announced this, noting that the project was presented during the Regional Electricity Group conference held there, which was attended by key representatives of transmission system operators, regulatory authorities and energy ministries. The project of the 400 kV Balti-Suceava transmission line construction was presented jointly by Moldelectrica on behalf of Moldova and Transelectrica on behalf of Romania. The length of the transmission line 400 kV Balti-Suceava will be 138 km, 48 km of which will pass through the territory of Moldova. It will connect the 400/330 kV substation in Suceava with a 330/35 kV substation in Balti. Earlier it was reported that Moldova and Romania intend to accelerate the implementation of the project to build a 400 kV Balti-Suceava transmission line, worth more than 76 million euros. As InfoMarket news agency reported earlier, earlier it was decided to reallocate money initially earmarked for the construction of the Balti-Suceava transmission line and expansion of the station in Balti for the construction of the Back-to-Back station in Vulcanesti. According to the Energy Ministry, the construction of a 600 MW Back-to-Back station in Vulcanesti is no longer justified from a technical and economic point of view now that Moldova has synchronized its power system along with Ukraine with the power system of Continental Europe (ENTSO - European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity). In addition, the feasibility study, developed with the support of the World Bank, identified a number of benefits of building new interconnections with Romania, including creating the necessary prerequisites for the development of electricity production from renewable sources in both countries, expanding the market at EU level and reducing energy infrastructure congestion through greater flexibility and sustainability of the two systems. "This project is of strategic importance for Moldova and will increase our energy independence. A reliable energy connection with Romania will allow us to become a full part of ENTSO-E, without depending on Ukraine. The construction of this line was included into the investment plan of the continental energy system", said Victor Parlicov, the Energy Minister. At the same time, in order to strengthen Moldova's energy independence, a high-voltage line Vulcanesti - Chisinau is being built, which will allow importing electric power, bypassing the Moldavskaya GRES. Currently, the design of the construction of this power line is being finalized and the strength tests of all types of supports have been completed. The construction works should be completed in 2025. // 25.04.2023 - InfoMarket.
