The U.S. and its allies will continue to support democratic governance, energy security and economic growth in Moldova to promote European and global security and prosperity.
This is stated in the Resolution in Support of Moldova passed by the House of Representatives. It reaffirms the U.S. commitment to Moldova in the face of "Russian malign influence and military aggression"; welcomes the strengthening of civil society, democracy and democratic institutions in Moldova and calls on the Moldovan people and elected representatives to further consolidate their democracy, strengthen the rule of law and fight corruption; welcomes the strong mandate given by the Moldovan people to pro-reform forces during the parliamentary elections of July 2021 and the presidential elections of November 2020. The resolution expresses strong support for Moldova's goal of integration into the Western democratic community; supports the Moldovan people's aspirations for membership in the European Union and the development of closer ties with transatlantic partners of the United States; and calls on the European Union to continue promoting Moldova's EU accession processes to ensure Moldova's economic and national security. The document also notes support for the Moldovan people and government in their efforts to rid the country of corruption and oligarchic control; urges the administration of US President Joe Biden to work with transatlantic allies and reconsider further action against any individuals or groups working to undermine democracy in Moldova. The resolution condemns in the strongest terms "Russia's malevolent activities in Moldova" and supports initiatives and productive cooperation within the four working groups of the U.S.-Moldova Strategic Dialogue as a means to strengthen ties between the two countries. The House of Representatives believes that it is in the interests of the U.S. and its allies to support democratic governance, energy security and economic growth in Moldova to promote European and global security and prosperity. The resolution calls on elected officials and politicians in Moldova to build on the practice of free and fair elections to further strengthen legitimate and fair electoral processes in the country; calls for the withdrawal from Moldovan sovereign territory of all personnel and equipment belonging to the Russian security services or Armed Forces. The document stressed that the U.S. will continue to support the negotiation process led by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the granting of a special status for the Transnistrian region within a territorially integral and sovereign Moldova within its internationally recognized borders. The declaration reads, among other things, that since February 24, 2022, the U.S. has provided Moldova with more than $320 million in emergency aid, and the European Union recently pledged 250 million euros to help Moldova overcome the economic, energy, humanitarian and social consequences of the war in Ukraine. // 24.02.2023 - InfoMarket.
