Moldova will receive a grant of 5.6 million euros from the EBRD for the creation of a modern waste management infrastructure in 3 regions of the country.
This is provided for by a corresponding grant agreement, which was ratified by the Moldovan parliament on Friday. The document itself was signed on March 30 by Minister of Finance Veronica Sireteanu and Vice President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for Policy and Partnership Mark Bowman. This funding is essential for investment in solid waste management for 3 districts, where in 2023 the Moldova Solid Waste Project will begin construction of a modern waste transport and sorting infrastructure. The €5.6 million EBRD grant complements a €25 million sovereign loan provided by the EBRD to the Moldovan government as part of a broader financing package that also includes a loan from the European Investment Bank and investment grants from other bilateral donors. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has mobilized €5.6 million in grant funding from the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P) for the first region as part of the first large-scale solid waste management project in Moldova. The project, implemented with the support of the EBRD, aims to create an infrastructure for solid waste management in Moldova. As part of it, it is planned to finance the purchase of equipment and machinery for transporting, sorting, processing and composting waste for the Ungheni, Calarasi and Nisporeni regions. About 185 thousand people will be the beneficiaries of the project, who will receive a modern system of sustainable waste management. As InfoMarket agency previously reported, the Moldova Solid Waste project will finance the purchase of equipment for the collection and transportation of waste (garbage containers and collection vehicles), as well as the construction of infrastructure for the disposal and treatment of solid waste (garbage storage (landfills) and objects for sorting and processing materials). The project will be implemented in Ungheni, Nisporeni and Calarasi regions in 2023-2027. The construction of a regional municipal waste storage facility in line with EU standards will close non-compliant landfills and reduce illegal landfills, while investment in source-separated recycling, green waste and mixed waste recycling facilities will increase recycling and ensure environmentally safe disposal. The EBRD is the largest institutional investor in Moldova. To date, the EBRD has invested more than €2.12 billion in Moldova through 163 projects in strategic areas such as infrastructure, financial institutions, industry, trade, agribusiness and more. Herewith, 52% of the EBRD portfolio is in sustainable infrastructure. The current portfolio of EBRD projects in Moldova is 1 billion 129 million euros. // 26.05.2023 — InfoMarket.
