Moldova asks for additional financing from the IMF and the Fund promises to continue all necessary support to overcome numerous challenges.

This was discussed during the meeting that the Prime Minister of Moldova Natalia Gavrilita held in Washington with the Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund Kenji Okamura, the Director of the IMF European Department Alfred Kammer and his Deputy Philip Gerson, the Executive Director of the IMF in the United States Elizabeth Sciortino, Executive Director of the IMF for Moldova Paul Hilbers and his deputy Luc Dresse. The parties discussed the current situation regarding the program with the IMF, as well as our country’s needs in the context of managing the crisis caused by the war in Ukraine. The head of government noted that in the context of recent regional developments and the need to rehabilitate all sectors affected by the war, IMF assistance is of vital importance, and an increase in the financial package for Moldova will allow the authorities to quickly respond to new challenges and realities. In this regard, the efforts of the authorities are aimed at supporting vulnerable segments of the population affected by rising prices, improving the business environment, accelerating economic growth and increasing energy sustainability. In this context, Prime Minister stressed that Moldova continues to rely on IMF support to advance the country's transformation agenda, stressing that the government remains firmly committed to reform processes in key sectors. “We want to propose additional measures for the affected sectors, and the financial contribution of the IMF, which benefits our country, is an additional signal sent to other donors and will serve as an incentive for additional external financing,” said Natalia Gavrilita. IMF representatives assured that Moldova will continue receiving all the necessary support to overcome the challenges associated with the war: inflation, disruption of trade flows, energy crisis and other difficulties facing our country. //20.07.2022 - InfoMarket.
