Moldovan agriculture needs a strong partnership with the EU for its modernization through investments in infrastructure, technologies and sustainable solutions - Vladimir Bolea
The Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry said this at a meeting in Chisinau with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. The Agriculture Minister informed her about the critical situation the Moldovan agricultural sector is facing due to the severe drought and heat in the summer of 2024, which caused a significant drop in the agricultural production and created serious economic difficulties for Moldovan farmers, especially grain producers. In this context, Vladimir Bolea discussed with the European Commission President the creation of a solidarity and development fund for Moldovan agriculture, aimed at supporting farmers affected by natural disasters and climate change. The Agriculture Minister mentioned the letters he sent to all the EU member states, asking them to back this fund, stressing the fact that the Moldovan agriculture needs a solid partnership with the EU to face the growing climate challenges. Vladimir Bolea stressed that the EU support is needed not only to ensure the continuity of agricultural production in Moldova, but also to contribute to the modernization and sustainability of the agricultural sector, by investing in agricultural infrastructure, technologies and sustainable solutions. At the same time, the Agriculture and Food Minister praised the opening of European markets for Moldovan products, such as cherries, table grapes, apples or plums, whose exports to the EU have grown exponentially in recent years, while the products themselves are highly appreciated by European consumers. A special topic of the conversation between Vladimir Bolea and Ursula von der Leyen was the very good cooperation between the Moldovan and European health authorities, thanks to which Moldova managed to meet the European requirements and recently realized the first export of poultry meat and eggs to the EU. The Agriculture Minister expressed gratitude to the EU for the support provided so far and stressed the need to continue this cooperation in order to protect and develop the agricultural sector, which is so important for Moldova's economy and stability. // 10.10.2024 - InfoMarket.
