Japan will provide Moldova with a grant of 300 million yen (1.9 million euros) to provide farmers with fertilizers.

Japan will provide Moldova with a grant of 300 million yen (1.9 million euros) to provide farmers with fertilizers.

This is provided for by a corresponding grant agreement, which was signed on December 6 in Chisinau by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova Nicu Popescu and the Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Moldova Yamada Yoichiro. Free funding will be used to implement the project “Providing farmers with fertilizers” in Moldova. Financial assistance is needed to support small and medium-sized farmers who are affected by rising prices for seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, as well as low prices for finished products. Accordingly, the €1.9 million grant will reduce the burden on small and medium-sized farmers affected by the consequences of the war in Ukraine by offering them cheaper financial solutions for purchasing fertilizers. The grant will be provided until March 31, 2024. Nicu Popescu, after the signing ceremony of the grant agreement, noted that Moldova as a whole suffered from the war in Ukraine, especially the agricultural sector of our country, but the government, together with development partners, managed to maintain stability. One of Moldova’s important partners is Japan, which is providing new support to our country in order to help its agricultural producers, strengthen, modernize and develop the agricultural sector, and help overcome the negative consequences of the war in Ukraine. In turn, Yamada Yoichiro said that the assistance allocated by Japan will help Moldovan farmers purchase fertilizers at more affordable prices. He noted that Russia's war against Ukraine had a negative impact on the agriculture of many countries, especially Moldova, which had to cope with numerous challenges after the closure of ports in Odessa and other Ukrainian cities, which were used for export and import of products, reduction in gas supplies, etc. The Japanese diplomat noted that Moldova is successfully implementing reforms and has achieved the status of a candidate for accession to the EU, and Japan, together with the European Union, will continue to provide assistance to it so that it can overcome existing challenges and achieve the desired goal of joining the EU.//06.12.2023 – InfoMarket.
