Moldova and Romania have asked for 77.6 million euros from the EU to finance 2 joint transport infrastructure development projects under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF)

This was announced by the State Secretary of the Romanian Transport Ministry, Irinel Scriosteanu, who said that the matter concerns the development of cross-border infrastructure through projects that increase the connectivity of road and rail transport infrastructure both on the Romanian and Moldovan sides. In particular, the EU financing is requested for a project on the construction of a bridge between Leuseni (Moldova) and Albita (Romania) + 6 km of the access road, which implies the modernization and equipment of the border crossing point. The Romanian side will build a 161 m long bridge over the Prut with 4 lanes, 2 in each direction, and Moldova will modernize 8 km of access road, 2 lanes in each direction, from the Leuseni-Chisinau highway. The total cost of the project is 87 million 555 thousand 101.34 euros, of which EU funding will be 50%, respectively 43 million 777 thousand 550.67 euros. The CEF support requested by the Romanian beneficiary amounts to 16 million 999 thousand 350.67 euros. The second project envisages the modernization of the Iasi - Border - Ungheni railroad section, which includes works on electrification and modernization of the section, modernization of electric traction systems and integration of the railway line into the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). The works will be carried out on the following sections: Socola - border (Romania) - 17 km of railroad track, border - Ungheni (Moldova) - 1.68 km of track, including the bridge over the Prut. The bridge will also be rehabilitated. The total cost of the project is 67 million 626 thousand 830 euros, of which EU funding is 50%, i.e. 33 million 813 thousand 415 euros. The EFC support for the Romanian beneficiary will amount to 30 million 233 thousand 609.76 euros. “The overall objective of the cross-border projects is to ensure adequate infrastructure capacity, compatibility and efficiency of border crossing services between the main Romanian-Moldovan customs offices, both by road and rail,” Ionel Scriosteanu said. // 30.01.2025 - InfoMarket
