Moldova will expand cooperation with Japan in the areas of “green” energy and emissions reduction and is discussing a project on the production and use of biogas
Carolina Novac, State Secretary at the Ministry of Energy, and Nicolae Magdîl, Head of the Department of Renewable Energy and “Green” Mobility, held a meeting with representatives of SDG Impact Japan—a Japanese company specializing in the creation and development of new enterprises aimed at addressing sustainable development challenges. Also present at the meeting was Tokutaro Nakai, former Deputy Minister of the Environment of Japan and currently a member of the SDG Impact Japan leadership team and director of the Millennium Sustainability Foundation. According to the Ministry of Energy, discussions focused on opportunities for developing and financing decarbonization projects in Moldova, including a proposal by a local company to produce and utilize biogas. During the production process, the plant generates approximately 900 metric tons of distillation waste daily; by installing a methane fermentation or anaerobic digestion system, about 250 metric tons of this waste will be converted into biogas each day. The biogas will be used directly in the distillation process, thereby reducing the plant’s dependence on natural gas. By recovering energy from waste generated during production, the project will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 10,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, improve energy efficiency, and promote the rational use of resources at the plant. At the same time, other project concepts in the areas of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and greenhouse gas emission reductions were also considered; these could receive support under cooperation mechanisms offered by the Government of Japan, specifically under the Joint Crediting Mechanism, of which Moldova has been a member since 2022. The Joint Crediting Mechanism is a bilateral framework program for carbon emission reduction credits established by the Government of Japan. Under this program, Japan cooperates with more than 30 countries worldwide on projects aimed at decarbonization and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and the emission reductions achieved through these projects are recognized and distributed in the form of carbon credits. These measures contribute to achieving the climate goals adopted by both countries under the Paris Agreement. Representatives of the Ministry of Energy and SDG Impact Japan agreed to continue their dialogue to identify and develop specific projects that have financing potential and can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and facilitating the transition to a greener and more sustainable economy. // 15.07.2026 – InfoMarket.
