The European Investment Bank will allocate 1.7 million euros for the development of a feasibility study for waste management in 2 regions of Moldova

This was announced by the Minister of Environment Sergiu Lazarencu and the representative of the European Investment Bank in Moldova Stella Renita, announcing the launch of a feasibility study for waste management regions 4 and 7 with the support of the EIB. The studies will be carried out with the support of the EIB and will help identify the most efficient, economic and environmental solutions for regions 4 and 7. Region 4 includes the municipality of Chisinau, Straseni, Ialoveni, Hincesti, Criuleni, Anenii Noi and Orhei districts, and region 7 - the municipality of Balti, Drochia, Riscani, Glodeni, Floresti, Falesti, Singerei, Soroca, Soldanesti, Rezina and Telenesti districts. The feasibility study will be completed by the end of 2026 and is a fundamental element to ensure the successful implementation of the Moldova Solid Waste Country Project and the adaptation of solutions to the realities of each region. In this regard, potential locations for infrastructure construction have already been identified. In addition to the feasibility study, a technical specification for the design and construction of the infrastructure will be developed, which will allow for a clear technical basis to be defined for the efficient and safe development of the next stages. Sergiu Lazarencu highlighted the progress in the implementation of the waste management project in the country, aimed at improving waste management at the national level and protecting the environment. "Over the past 4 years, we have made significant efforts to rid the country of garbage. We have identified resources from development partners to create waste management infrastructure across the country and ensured an irreversible path for the Moldova Solid Waste Country Program," Sergiu Lazarencu noted. He stressed that significant progress has been made in the country in waste management regions 1, 5 and 8. "In region 1, which includes Cahul, Cantemir, Taraclia, Ceadâr-lunga, Vulcanesti districts and Comrat, we are at the stage of creating a regional operator of the sanitary service. In addition, we are in the process of transferring the identified lands from local government ownership to state ownership and have signed a grant agreement for the project," the Minister of Environment noted. According to him, in regions 5 and 8, which include Ungheni, Nisporeni, Calarasi, Briceni, Ocnita, Edinet and Donduseni districts, a grant agreement was signed. The stage of transferring lands to state ownership has been completed, the regional operator is officially registered. At the same time, an agreement has been signed with a consulting company, which is currently preparing documentation for contracts for the performance of work and the purchase of equipment. Tenders will be announced in the second half of this year. The Solid Waste in Moldova project envisages the creation of 6 waste management regions. Each region will have a recycling and environmental management center, which will include sorting, composting and transshipment stations. The project also envisages the acquisition of equipment and vehicles necessary for waste collection, transportation and recycling, as well as the closure of unauthorized landfills, thereby contributing to the protection of the environment and public health. // 02.04.2025 – InfoMarket.
