Germany will allocate Moldova additional aid of 60 million euros to overcome the energy crisis.

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development announced this after the Berlin meeting of Minister Svenja Schulze and Moldovan President Maia Sandu. The the sides discussed Moldova's course for reforms and further support to overcome the consequences of the war in Ukraine. As noted, Moldova has been particularly hard hit by the current crises: the war in Ukraine and the resulting displacement of refugees, as well as the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. More than a quarter of the population already lives in absolute poverty. Now the country is experiencing an energy crisis: In the last 12 months, the purchase price of gas has increased 12-fold. Germany's Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development has said it supports the Moldovan government in maintaining the course of reforms to move toward the EU and in stabilizing the country with short-term support measures for needy households. To cope with Moldova's current energy crisis, the agency is allocating an additional 60 million euros, mostly from special funds to mitigate the international consequences of the war in Ukraine. Svenja Schulze said that Germany is ready to support Moldova in its course of reforms and in overcoming the acute crisis. "Given the large number of crises the country is currently facing, it is remarkable how quickly and purposefully the new Moldovan government has implemented judicial and administrative reforms in its first year of existence. It is very important now that people in need get through the winter safely and thus stabilize a heavily burdened country. At the same time, we are supporting Moldova with energy efficiency measures in order to get out of dependence on energy supplies from Russia," the German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development said. She stressed that due to the war in Ukraine and the consequences for neighboring countries, the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development launched a support program for Moldova. The support package now includes aid totaling 112 million euros. In addition to financing social problems, the program will support comprehensive measures to improve energy efficiency, including in buildings. Support for refugees from Ukraine and host communities is also an integral part of the program. // 26.09.2022 - InfoMarket.
