Moldovan exports reached a record $7 billion in 2025, with exports of services increasing while exports of goods declined - Veaceslav Ioniță
In his “Economic Minute” review, the expert noted that Moldova’s exports reached a historic high of $7 billion in 2025, increasing by approximately $400 million compared to the previous record set in 2022 ($6.6 billion). At the same time, he noted that this achievement comes against the backdrop of a profound structural transformation: the main driver is no longer goods exports, but services—especially IT—while goods exports have been declining for the third consecutive year. “The structure of exports has changed significantly: goods exports amounted to about $3.8 billion (a decline of more than $550 million), while services exports grew to nearly $3.2 billion (+$1 billion). Moreover, in the second quarter of 2025, services exports exceeded goods exports for the first time—a symbolic moment indicating the direction of our development. The main drivers of growth were the services sector, primarily IT, as well as agriculture, which ensured the recovery of goods exports,” the expert noted. At the same time, to avoid excessive optimism regarding export statistics, Veaceslav Ionita suggests correctly assessing exports—in relation to GDP. “While exports accounted for about 45% of GDP in 2022, they fell to approximately 34% in 2025. In other words, despite growth in absolute terms, the economy grew even faster, and the role of exports in it diminished. At the same time, the share of goods exports in GDP amounted to less than 19% of GDP (a historic low), while exports of services reached nearly 16% of GDP (a historic high). “Thus, two opposing trends are observed: a steady decline in traditional exports and a rapid rise in service exports,” said the expert, noting that Moldova’s development trajectory in the coming years depends on a proper understanding of this transformation. // 07.04.2026 – InfoMarket.
