Moldova and the United States to expand cooperation in the agricultural sector
This was discussed during a meeting held by the leadership of Moldova’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry with a delegation from the State of North Carolina (U.S.), led by North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall. The discussions took place in the context of strengthening the strategic partnership between Moldova and North Carolina. One of the topics of the meeting was cooperation in the fields of agriculture, applied research, and consulting services. The parties discussed North Carolina’s experience in establishing links between universities, government agencies, research institutions, and farmers so that scientific findings can be more quickly put into practice and meet real needs on the ground. Representatives of the U.S. delegation noted that North Carolina’s extension services model is based on ongoing collaboration between universities, government agencies, and agricultural communities. This model facilitates the transfer of knowledge from research to practice and provides farmers with technical recommendations based on data, analysis, and applied research for more effective management of risks related to fertilizers, water, soil, productivity, and climate. In turn, the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture emphasized that Moldova needs agricultural advisory services that are closer to farmers and better connected to research institutions and the academic community. As part of the process of aligning with EU requirements, farmers need clear, practical, and tailored information for various types of agricultural enterprises, ranging from small farms to export-oriented producers. The parties also discussed the AKIS information system currently under development, which will bring together knowledge, research, advice, training, and useful information for agriculture. In this context, knowledge dissemination centers and agricultural extension agents could play an important role in testing, refining, and implementing the system in collaboration with farmers. The parties reaffirmed their commitment to continuing cooperation so that the more than 25-year partnership between Moldova and North Carolina yields tangible results for the agricultural sector. // 05.05.2026 — InfoMarket
