ANSA: The new sanitary regulation on maximum limits of pesticides in food tightens some requirements.
According to the National Agency for Food Safety (ANSA), the new Sanitary Regulation on maximum levels of pesticide residues in or on food and animal feed of plant and animal origin, which took effect on January 23, 2024, contains new maximum permissible standards for pesticide content in the above-mentioned products, which are much stricter than the previous ones. While commenting on a batch of bananas recalled from the trade, in which it was confirmed that the residues of chlorpyrifos pesticide were exceeded, the agency noted that before the entry of the new Regulation, the permissible norms of this substance were 3 mg/kg, and now - 0.01 mg/kg, i.e. 300 times less. ANSA emphasizes that similar requirements are in force in many countries of the world, and cases of exceeding the permissible norms are periodically detected. For example, the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) has registered 15 notifications of residues of this pesticide, including one of the most recent cases in Estonia. The agency urges producers, importers and sellers to follow the established norms and not to allow such products on the shelves of stores, as the responsibility for the safety of food products applies to them equally. Last week, a batch of bananas (more than 23 tons) produced in Ecuador was withdrawn from trade in Moldova. // 07.05.2024 - InfoMarket.
