Moldova remains the leading supplier of sunflower seeds to the EU and in the period from July 1, 2023 to March 2, 2024, exported over 311.42 thousand tons there, which is 80.6% more than during the same period last season.

Moldova remains the leading supplier of sunflower seeds to the EU and in the period from July 1, 2023 to March 2, 2024, exported over 311.42 thousand tons there, which is 80.6% more than during the same period last season.

This was announced by the director of the Association of Exporters and Importers of Agricultural and Grain Products "Agrocereale" Iurie Rija. According to him, this situation is due to the fact that Ukraine, which until now has been the main supplier to the EU, has redirected its exports to other destinations this season, as well as the fact that the main and alternative export routes of this country have been disrupted. In February of this year sunflower prices have decreased both in Moldova and in neighboring Romania and Ukraine. In Moldova, the decrease was the largest - by $40 per ton per month - from $410 to $370 per ton in the port of Giurgiulesti. In Constanta, the price reduction was $30 per ton - to $405 per ton, in Ukraine - by $15 per ton - to $290 per ton in the ports of Reni/Izmail. The reason for the reduction in sunflower prices is due to an unprecedented decline in the cost of sunflower oil. As the expert noted, for the period from July 1, 2023 to March 2, 2024, Ancom Agro was the most active exporter of sunflower seeds from Moldova, supplying 47 thousand 481 tons of sunflower seeds abroad (15% of the total volume). Traditionally, the 2nd place was taken by the Rusagro-Prim company with a share of 12% and a supply volume of 36 thousand 079 tons. It is followed by the Agro Nova Prim company with a share of 7% of the total supply volume (22 thousand 651 tons). Among the large exporters, the following companies stand out: Orom-Imexpo (20318 tons), Vadalex Grains (15552 tons), Limburg (12001 tons). It is noteworthy that 86% of the total volume of sunflower exported this season was sent to EU countries, and its largest importers were Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and Spain. “Moldova’s reorientation towards exports to the European Union is a beneficial development, since this change in market direction has brought with it certain advantages. Previously, exports to the CIS countries predominated. Adaptation to new market conditions and increased demand from European countries indicates the diversification and consolidation of Moldova’s trade partnership,” stated Iurie Rija. // 11.03.2024 — InfoMarket
