The railway systems of Moldova and Ukraine will be integrated into the EU system, and railway corridors with European gauge will be created in them.
This was discussed during the 5th meeting of the Railway Steering Committee on the development of the European gauge, in which the Secretaries of State for Road Infrastructure and Transport of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Nicolai Mîndra and Mircea Păscăluță, took part. The meeting brought together representatives of the European Commission, Joint Assistance to Support Projects in European Regions (JASPERS), Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine and Moldova. The parties discussed ensuring continuity and agreed on next steps in accordance with the priorities defined in the Strategy for the Integration of the Railway Systems of Ukraine and Moldova into the EU System, developed by JASPERS experts. The strategy will determine the future development of European gauge railway corridors in Ukraine and Moldova. At the same time, during the multilateral meeting, the stages of implementation of projects presented in the CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) program based on the results of the 2022 competitions were discussed. In the same way, infrastructure projects that will be applied within the framework of the 2023 competitions were discussed, the preparation of which teams of national authorities work together with JASPERS experts. Earlier it was reported that the European Union could finance the construction of the Lviv-Iasi-Chisinau-Odessa railway line with European gauge. The implementation of this important project with EU support will be possible after the feasibility study for connecting the railway networks of Moldova and Ukraine with the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) is soon completed and presented. The project for the construction of the Lviv-Iasi-Chisinau-Odessa railway line with European gauge is of strategic importance in this area. As InfoMarket previously reported, the European Union will provide Moldova with a grant of 20 million euros for the rehabilitation of railways. The EU Delegation to our country noted that this financial assistance is provided in the form of a grant and is aimed at connecting Moldova to the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). / 17.11.2023 — InfoMarket.
