The National Bureau of Statistics, on the occasion of the International Youth Day (12 August), provided statistics on this category of the population. As of January 1, 2021, the population of Moldova amounted to 2 million 597.1 thousand people, of which 680.3 thousand (26.2%) are young people aged 14 to 34 years. About 49.4% of young people are women and 50.6% are men. Over the past 5 years, the number of young people aged 14-19 has decreased by 10.1%, at the age of 20-24 - by 31.6%, at the age of 25-29 - by 23.6%, at the age of 30 34 years - by 6.7%. According to statistics, only 4 out of 10 young people are employed in the labor market, 6 out of 10 are inactive. In particular, in 2020, 248 thousand people (36.3% of the population aged 15-34) were employed, and 2% - were unemployed. About 421 thousand young people were economically inactive, of which 40% are involved in the national education system. Moreover, more than 5% of employed young people studied at the same time, and every fourth had an informal job. The youth unemployment rate is higher than the national average, and at the end of 2020 amounted to 5.1%. More than half of the unemployed young people were men (57.4%), about 2/3 were urban residents (64.9%). According to the NBS, the lower the education level of young people, the higher the unemployment rate. The main sources of income for young people (14-34 years old), on average, were wages (33.5%) and parental assistance (30.6%), followed by social benefits (10.8%), remittances from abroad ( 8.6%) and individual agricultural activities (8.1%). Herewith, at the age of 14-19, the dominant source of income for young people (73.5%) is help from their parents, and at the age of 30-34, it is salary (51.5%). The number of criminals among young people decreased from 8.5 thousand in 2016 to 5.8 thousand in 2020, more than 93% of them are men. About 46% of criminals among young people are between the ages of 18-24, 36% are between the ages of 25-29, and 18.3% are between the ages of 14-17.
