Moldova is implementing major renewable energy projects and will continue to diversify its energy supply sources to strengthen the country's energy security - the Ministry of Energy
Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu stated this while speaking at the 9th Balkans Energy Summit, which took place on April 29-30 in Athens. According to the Ministry of Energy, during a panel discussion on strategic energy cooperation in the Balkans, the Moldovan Energy Minister spoke about the significant contribution of regional cooperation to achieving Moldova's energy sustainability and interconnection goals. Dorin Junghietu confirmed our country's interest in the Trans-Balkan Electricity Corridor as an integral part of the national strategy to consolidate energy infrastructure and diversify energy supply routes and sources. At the same time, he stressed that Moldova continues to develop large-scale projects in the field of renewable energy, and in favorable weather conditions, energy from renewable sources covers an increasing share of domestic electricity consumption. “In January, local renewable energy sources covered about 8% of total electricity consumption, in February - 6%, in March - 10%, and in April they already covered more than 20% of total consumption, reaching a historic high of 34% on one day. We have very clear goals for attracting investment and developing renewable energy. The winners of the first tender for the construction of wind and photovoltaic power plants with a total capacity of 165 MW will be announced soon, with estimated investments of around €200 million following this round. At the same time, a new round of tenders for the construction of large renewable energy parks, which will also include modern energy storage systems, will be launched this fall,” said Moldova's Minister of Energy. According to him, from 2020 to the present, renewable energy production capacity has grown approximately eightfold, reaching a total of more than 646 MW in February this year. Speaking about the diversification of energy sources, Dorin Junghietu highlighted the role of Energocom, which, having state obligations to purchase the energy needed for consumption on the right bank of the Dniester, purchased electricity from Romanian, Ukrainian and local producers in the first 3 months of 2025, including energy produced from renewable sources in Moldova. It also emphasized the importance of international cooperation in this area. In 2023, Energocom signed a framework agreement with the Bulgarian company Nomad Energy Company LTD, which specializes in electricity trading. This partnership remains active today and is an important solution for meeting the country's energy needs, given that, as of January 1, 2025, the right bank of the Dniester will no longer purchase electricity from Moldavskaya GRES. The Energy Minister noted that all these initiatives are part of a comprehensive national energy strategy aimed at integrating Moldova into the European energy market through the development of modern infrastructure, increasing domestic production capacity, and establishing strategic partnerships at the regional and international levels. Dorin Junghietu also confirmed the indispensability of the Vertical Gas Corridor for Moldova's energy security and ensuring uninterrupted natural gas supplies, but also stressed the importance of establishing a single and transparent tariff along the entire route of the corridor as a key tool for strengthening commercial viability and long-term sustainability. At the same time, the Moldovan Energy Minister stressed the need to further diversify energy supply sources in order to strengthen the country's energy resilience “in the face of crises caused by Russia.” During the summit, Dorin Junghietu held talks with a number of officials and industry experts, exchanging views on the development of strategic projects to diversify energy sources and integrate Moldova into European energy networks. The Balkans Energy Summit was organized by Net Zero Circle. The event was attended by leaders of the region's energy sector, who discussed issues of energy transition, energy security, and investment opportunities in energy infrastructure and renewable energy sources. // 30.04.2025 — InfoMarket
