The cessation of Russian gas supplies through Sudzha will have completely different consequences for the residents of Moldova on the right and left banks of the Dniester — WatchDog

This opinion was expressed by the energy expert of the named community, Evgen Muravschi. He noted that in the territory controlled by the constitutional authorities of Moldova, the main consequence will be that without this gas, the Moldovan GRES located in the Transnistrian region will no longer be able to produce electricity. Thus, right-bank Moldova will have to buy more expensive electricity on the Romanian market. The authorities have already faced similar situations in October and November 2022. However, on the left bank of the Dniester, the situation would be much worse. The expert drew attention to the fact that the authorities of the unrecognized Transnistria depend on “free gas” from Russia not only from an energy point of view but also economically: the region’s budget is almost exclusively based on it. The only alternative to Russian gas supplies through Sudzha could be the transfer of some volumes of gas by Gazprom through the Turkish Stream pipeline laid in the Black Sea, and then through the Trans-Balkan corridor, if there is free capacity there. “However, if Transnistria no longer receives Russian gas either through Ukraine or through the Trans-Balkan corridor, it will have to turn to the constitutional authorities of Moldova for help,” emphasized Evgen Muravschi. //13.08.2024 — InfoMarket.
