Moldova is ready to discuss with Gazprom a phased repayment of the historical gas debt of consumers on the right bank of the Dniester after an international audit and after obtaining a reasonable current price for gas - Natalia Gavrilita stated.

Prime Minister said this while speaking on the air of one of the private TV channels. Referring to Gazprom's demand to pay off in a short time the historical gas debt of Chisinau, which, as noted in Moscow, exceeds $700 million, taking into account the delay in payments, the head of the Moldovan government stressed that since 2015 Moldova (excluding Transnistria) has not accumulated debts; on the contrary, it paid on the historical gas debts of state-owned enterprises. In particular, according to her, Termoelectrica directed 20 million euros to pay off the historical debt. “We are ready to continue to repay the debt accumulated by state-owned enterprises in parts, but we do not know how the debt of $700 million was formed, which Gazprom has now announced. We want to conduct an audit, possibly jointly with Gazprom, in order to find out the exact amount of the debt and then discuss the issue of debt restructuring. Gas prices are currently excessively high, and in such circumstances, we believe that it is not the time to discuss hastily the process of debt restructuring. We can discuss this when the gas price returns closer to its normal price. We are ready to conduct a joint debt audit and discuss acceptable debt repayment terms, but not in the current conditions of the global gas and energy crisis, when gas prices are excessively high even for highly developed countries. We are ready to pay for the current gas supplies at reasonable prices and to gradually compensate for the debt after an audit,” said Natalia Gavrilita. She drew attention to the fact that Gazprom offers a 25% discount on gas subject to repayment of the historical debt in a short time, but Chisinau considers this unacceptable, since in addition to the excessively high gas price in the current conditions, the authorities will need to provide repayment of historical debt, and there are no such funds. Prime Minister does not know why Gazprom did not discuss the issue of paying off historical debts in a short time with the previous authorities, and this problem was posed acutely right now. She did not make other statements on this matter, so that these declarations would not affect the course of the current negotiations. // 26.10.2021 – InfoMarket
