The World Bank is ready to continue supporting Moldova in implementing investment projects to ensure energy security, modernize infrastructure, and integrate into the EU energy market
This was discussed at a meeting between Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu and World Bank representatives, during which they discussed priority projects to strengthen Moldova's energy security. These projects aim to consolidate infrastructure, diversify supply sources, expand renewable energy generation capacity, and improve energy efficiency. As noted, the World Bank is supporting the implementation of three major energy projects in Moldova, worth a total of $224.5 million. These include the construction of a 400 kV Vulcanesti-Chisinau overhead power line, including the modernization of the 330 kV Chisinau substation; the construction of two efficient cogeneration units at Termoelectrica; and the creation of a renewable energy mechanism in Moldova (MEERM). For each project, an analysis of current developments was conducted, identifying the necessary measures to expedite procedures and work in the event of delays, ensuring completion within the agreed timeframe. At the same time, a new project, currently in the preparatory stage, was discussed. It envisions the construction of a highly efficient cogeneration plant, which will replace Termoelectrica's existing capacity by 2030. Alexandru Munteanu thanked the World Bank for its support in enhancing the country's energy resilience and noted that the government will continue to work closely with the Bank on the implementation of large energy projects, focusing on efficiency, transparency, and timeliness. He noted that energy is one of the most important investments in Moldova's future. Economic competitiveness, business development, and the quality of public services depend on it. "Our priorities remain the development of interregional connectivity with Romania, the expansion of energy storage capacity, and investments in energy efficiency. It is equally important to reduce consumption where possible. More efficient energy use means lower costs, increased economic competitiveness, and more resources for development," the Prime Minister stated. In this context, Ulrich Schmitt, World Bank Country Manager for Moldova, and Stephanie Gil, World Bank Energy Sector Manager for Europe and Central Asia, confirmed their readiness to continue supporting Moldova in making the necessary investments to ensure energy security, modernize infrastructure, and integrate into the EU energy market. // 18.06.2026 —InfoMarket.
