Moldova’s largest waste transfer station is being built in Chisinau as part of a project with a total cost of over 26 million euros
As reported by the Chisinau City Hall, it is implementing the most ambitious project in the field of environmental infrastructure in Moldova. The “Chisinau Solid Waste” project, with a total cost of over 26 million euros, aims to modernize the entire waste management system in the capital. According to Ludmila Pavlenco, first deputy director of the municipal enterprise Autosalubritate, work on both project sites is in full swing. “A sorting station is not a garbage collection site, but a comprehensive infrastructure with sorting lines, concrete platforms, and leachate treatment systems. In Chisinau, we are building in accordance with regulations, with investment and responsibility,” she said. Meanwhile, work at the former landfill in Ciocana (Site I) is 75% complete. It should be noted that in December 2020, the Chisinau municipality signed a financing agreement for measures to modernize the waste management system in Chisinau. The signing of the financing agreement was an important step in the “Chisinau Solid Waste” project, for which the municipality had been negotiating with development partners to secure the necessary funding. It was previously reported that the total funding for the “Chisinau Solid Waste” project amounts to 26.65 million euros. The overall financing plan for the project includes the following sources of funding: EBRD—a €9 million loan and an €850,000 grant; EIB—a €9 million non-repayable loan; E5P—a €5 million grant; and the Municipality of Chisinau—a contribution of €2.8 million. Funds from loans and grants are used for the following activities: purchase of specialized vehicles for waste collection and transportation; purchase of containers; construction of a new transfer station with a waste sorting line; closure and reclamation of the temporary landfill in Ciocana. // 12.05.2026 — InfoMarket
