
Moldova to receive a WB loan of 44.1 million euros and a grant of 1.55 million euros from Austria for the development of water supply and sanitation systems.
This is provided for by the relevant financing agreement between Moldova and the International Development Association, part of the World Bank Group, for the implementation of the Moldova Water Security and Sanitation Project. The document was signed in Washington on April 21, 2022 and now the Parliament of Moldova has approved in the first reading its ratification. It is planned that for the project implementation the World Bank will grant Moldova a 44.1 million euros loan through the International Development Association and the Austrian Government through the Austrian Development Agency will provide a grant of 1.55 million euros. The WB loan balance will be repaid according to a set schedule: from March 15, 2027 to September 15, 2046 inclusive, with an interest rate of 1.65%; from March 15, 2047 to September 15, 2051 inclusive, with an interest rate of 3.4%. Thanks to the project, tens of thousands of households will have access to quality water. The Moldova Water Security and Sanitation Project will improve the water supply and sanitation infrastructure in many communities in Cahul and Vulcanesti districts. Also, the wastewater infrastructure in Soroca and Comrat municipalities will be expanded and improved through the construction of modern wastewater treatment plants. Wastewater will not flow into rivers and lakes, and residents of these two cities and nearby villages will live in a cleaner and healthier environment. The project is planned to be implemented by the beginning of 2027, and part of the funds will be used to improve sanitary conditions in 100 schools and 25 health care institutions in rural areas. The implementation of the above mentioned project will contribute to the implementation of the Water Supply and Sanitation Strategy for 2014-2030, through which the Moldovan authorities are aiming at providing 80% of the urban and 75% of the rural areas with water supply and sanitation infrastructure by 2024. // 09.06.2022 – InfoMarket
