Moldova will harmonize legislation on the use of genetically modified microorganisms with EU standards
This is envisaged by the draft Law on the Use of Genetically Modified Microorganisms in Isolated Systems, which the Parliament adopted in the first reading. The purpose of the draft law is to create a regulatory framework necessary for activities involving the use of genetically modified microorganisms in isolated systems in compliance with the precautionary principle in order to protect human health and the environment. The document also provides for the transfer of provisions of EU legislation in this area to national legislation. The draft law regulates the powers of competent authorities to implement measures for the use of genetically modified microorganisms in conditions of isolation and safety; assessment of risks to human health and the environment of activities related to the use of genetically modified microorganisms; determination of the hazard class; biosafety measures, labeling and packaging; notification and authorization procedure. Another provision of the draft concerns the extension of the validity period of the permit for activities with genetically modified organisms from 5 to 10 years. It is also proposed to introduce 5 new types of permits for this type of activity. According to the author of the legislative initiative - the Ministry of the Environment - the creation of a national regulatory framework aimed at regulating the use of genetically modified microorganisms in isolated systems will ensure a high level of protection for the health of humans, animals and the environment, as well as ensure a high level of safety for biotechnologies entering the domestic market. // 22.05.2025 — InfoMarket.
