Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean called on meat processors to prevent price increases for final products and ensure fair competition.
This was discussed during a government meeting, which discussed the situation on the meat market in Moldova and its impact on the work of meat processing plants in connection with the detection of two outbreaks of African swine fever. As reported by the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Prime Minister noted that this serious disease has affected not only Moldova, but the entire region. The authorities have taken all necessary measures to stop the spread of the virus and are analyzing how to limit the economic consequences of the outbreaks. "The situation has affected both meat producers and processors. We do not want to scare away investments, but we must also take care of processors, provide them with sufficient raw materials at reasonable prices. Let's manage the situation correctly in order to prevent price increases for final products, ensure competitiveness and fair competition," Dorin Recean said. The meeting considered ways to ensure the necessary volumes in the manufacturing industry in the context of the Easter holidays. In this regard, meat and sausage producers noted the need to diversify meat procurement sources. Another task is to improve the accounting of livestock on farms and in households, as well as available statistical data for a correct assessment of the situation in the sector. The parties also discussed the policy of restoring livestock in the coming years, mentioning the existence of several subsidy programs for the livestock sector. The Prime Minister separately wrote on his social network page that he talked with pork processors in the context of the difficult situation caused by the outbreak of African swine fever. Processors drew attention to the risk of a shortage of pork from domestic farms, especially in the run-up to the Easter holidays. The Prime Minister said that data is currently being collected and a final calculation of total losses in terms of local products is being made. According to him, the parties agreed on several important things. First of all, it is about the balance between producers-processors-consumers, in order to continue supporting investments in local pig farming, but also ensuring that meat processing plants have enough raw materials and offer good value for money to consumers. It is also important to ensure solidarity and cooperation between the three important links in the industry - encouraging pig farmers, supporting those who process meat and put national products on the shelf, and protecting the interests of consumers. Dorin Recean also stressed the need to improve the procedure for recording and reporting statistics on animals from commercial farms, as well as from households. The Prime Minister noted that the current priority is to stop the spread of the virus and eradicate the disease as a result of two major outbreaks - a process in which all responsible institutions are fully involved, including those that ensure the safety of people and the environment. No other outbreaks have been identified so far, and outbreaks in the north of the country have been successfully eliminated since the beginning of the year. "To stop this disease, which has a negative impact on the economic sector, businesses and our households, we need everyone's cooperation and responsibility," the head of government said. It should be noted that two major outbreaks of African swine fever were detected on farms in Roscani village, Anenii Noi district, and Cimișeni village, Criuleni district. On both farms, sick pigs are slaughtered in strict compliance with sanitary and veterinary standards, without risk to people and the environment. //25.03.2025 – InfoMarket.
