Moldovan authorities plan to abolish the law stipulating that 50% of goods on store shelves must be of Moldovan origin.
Minister of Economy Sergiu Gaibu announced this while speaking on Jurnal TV. He noted that the abolishment of this Law on Internal Trade was touched upon during numerous discussions with economic agents and business associations. Sergiu Gaibu refuted claims that a similar mechanism to support domestic producers worked in Romania. “That's a lie; it didn't work there a single day. They tried to promote such a law for many years, but when it was supposed to come into force, it was blocked,” the Minister of Economy said. He stressed that the requirement to provide at least 50% of the store shelves for products manufactured / processed in Moldova is contrary to international agreements that our country has signed, including WTO norms and the provisions of the Association Agreement with the EU. “The question is very simple. Either we will create a problem for foreign trade in the current difficult conditions and will have a conflict with the main trading partners of Moldova, or we will find an effective solution within the framework of the current legislation and the country's obligations to external partners and will not engage in useless populism, but will find good solutions to support domestic manufacturers and the national economy,” said the Minister of Economy. According to him, the authorities provide support to domestic producers through a number of programs, helping with the launch and development of a business, the purchase of new equipment, improving product quality, certification, and promoting exports. Sergiu Gaibu noted that many manufacturers have good sales channels abroad and do not want to sell their products on the local market; they use preferential trade with the EU and the CIS. “Work is underway, but we do not have a magic solution for all sectors. Each sector needs to be analyzed separately, it is necessary to develop sectors of the economy that bring more profit, more added value,” the Minister of Economy said. //03.02.2022 - InfoMarket.
