The Moldovan government is allocating 50 million lei to farmers whose corn and sunflower crops were damaged by the 2025 drought

Specifically, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the Regulation on the procedure for distributing financial resources to farmers whose corn and sunflower crops were damaged by the drought and extreme heat in 2025. 50 million lei will be allocated for this purpose from the National Fund for Agriculture and Rural Development. "This is direct support for farmers who have suffered significant losses. In recent years, more and more young people and families have returned home and invested in agriculture. Unfortunately, many began this activity during extremely difficult agricultural years. This support is a clear signal that the state is not abandoning them alone in the face of the climate crisis and that their work and courage matter," noted Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Ludmila Catlabuga. Farmers who have suffered losses in corn and/or sunflower crops, amounting to at least 50% of the total damage, as confirmed by assessment reports, will be eligible for compensation. Financial assistance will be provided as a direct payment per hectare through the Agency for Interventions and Payments in Agriculture. Applications for financial assistance will be submitted to AIPA regional offices within 20 working days of the entry into force of the regulation, from the date of its publication in the Official Monitor. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, as of October 23, 2025, 792 acts establishing the extent of damage to sunflower and corn crops as a result of drought had been registered, with the total area affected amounting to 56,291.16 hectares.
