Moldova exported the largest volume of wheat in 2023, relative to the previous 3 years - 1 million 136 thousand 643 tons, with Romania being the main export destination with a 62% share.

Moldova exported the largest volume of wheat in 2023, relative to the previous 3 years - 1 million 136 thousand 643 tons, with Romania being the main export destination with a 62% share.

This was reported by the director of the Association of Exporters and Importers of Agricultural and Grain Products Agrocereale, Iurie Rija, who said that the total exports of Moldovan wheat last year were 3.9 times higher than in 2022 (291 thousand 242 tons) and 5.3% higher than in 2021 (1 million 079 thousand 326 tons). However, the average export price of wheat in 2023 was the lowest in the last 3 years - 3.77 lei/kg in 2023, which is 29.7% lower than the value of 2022 (5.39 lei/kg) and 10.5% lower than the value of 2021 (4.21 lei/kg). According to Iurie Rija, this situation is manifested not only in Moldova, but also on the world market in general, where the prices for cereals were 15.4% below the average value of 2022. The director of Agrocereale explained that Moldovan traders sell grain on the international market at prices dictated by buyers. The lower the selling price of wheat, the lower the purchase price the trader can offer to farmers. Thus, there is a significant impact of demand and market conditions on the current low grain prices in Moldova. As Iurie Rija noted, at the moment there are about 500-600 thousand tons of wheat left in Moldova. In the next 2 months, there are no signs on the international exchanges that would contribute to the growth of wheat prices - there is an active competition on the part of Russian and Ukrainian exports, which led to a decrease in wheat prices in the Black Sea basin. Russia is offering wheat at $218/ton, which is below the psychological threshold of $220/ton. This low price offered by Russian exporters has a big impact on the Black Sea market, as the Russian harvest is constantly revised upwards. Thus, the pressure on wheat markets will continue in the coming weeks. The director of Agrocereale specified that out of the 1.13 million tons of wheat exported by Moldova in 2023 about 86% accounted for the top 20 companies. At the same time, the company Agrofloris-Nord, with a share of 12.36%, ranked 1st, with a total export volume of 140.5 thousand tons. The second place was taken by the company Orom Imexpo, with a share of 11% (123.4 thousand tons). In the 3rd place is the company Rostan Plus from Transnistria, which exported 113.8 thousand tons. Iurie Rija said that in 2023, Romania became the main destination for wheat exports from Moldova with a volume of 707,000 tons, which accounted for 62% of the total exports of about 1.14 million tons last year. At the same time, the volume of wheat exported to Romania in 2023 was 4.4 times higher than the exports made to this country in 2022 (160.2 thousand tons) and was 18 times higher than in 2021 (39.7 thousand tons). If in 2021 on the Moldovan market only 17 companies exported wheat to Romania, in 2023 their number increased 4.5 times - up to 77 companies. The expert pointed out that in 2021, the main share of Moldovan wheat exports went to Turkey, but in 2022, relations with it became more complicated, given that a significant part of grain was transported to a given destination through logistics hubs in Black Sea ports, which in 2022 were blocked as a result of Russian aggression against Ukraine. Moreover, since April 2023, Turkey imposed a 130% tax on grain imports, which forced traders from Moldova to reorient to Romania. // 22.02.2024 - InfoMarket.
