Chisinau considers the mechanism of gas supplies from Moldavskaya GRES for electricity generation for the right bank of the Dniester to be economically inefficient, since the final price of such electricity will be higher than the average price on the exchange – the Ministry of Energy

Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu stated this at a press conference on Monday while answering journalists’ questions. He noted that in 2025, despite the existing challenges, Moldova strengthened its energy security, diversified its sources of natural gas and electricity supplies, and, among other things, stopped purchasing electricity from Moldavskaya GRES (MGRES) located in Transnistria as of January 1, 2025. Currently, the electricity needs of right-bank Moldova are covered by domestic production and imports from Romania and Ukraine. The head of the Ministry of Energy explained that electricity supplies from MGRES to the right bank of the Dniester are unprofitable at current gas prices, as MGRES consumes 3 MW of natural gas to produce 1 MW of electricity. While commenting the statement by Transnistrian leader Vadim Krasnoselsky that MGRES in Dnestrovsk is capable of increasing electricity production, including for supplies to the right bank of the Dniester, but that the power plant must be provided with sufficient gas for this, Dorin Junghietu noted that it is important to know what kind of gas MGRES is ready to use to increase electricity production, since the 2.5-3 million cubic meters of gas currently consumed in the region per day is only enough to cover its own electricity needs. The head of the Moldovan Ministry of Energy emphasized that, in Chisinau's opinion, the possible purchase of gas and the gas transfer to MGRES for processing and electricity production for the right bank of the Dniester, taking into account the current cost of gas, operating costs, and electricity transmission costs, makes such a mechanism economically inefficient, since MGRES consumes 3 MW of natural gas to produce 1 MW of electricity, and the final price of the electricity it generates will be higher than the average purchase price of electricity on the free market, on the exchange. // 22.12.2025 – InfoMarket.
