Moldova advocates expanding cooperation with the EBRD in energy, agriculture, waste management, public-private partnerships, and SME support
This was discussed during a meeting of Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development President Odile Renaud-Basso, who discussed projects being implemented in Moldova with the support of the EBRD. As noted, Moldova will receive an additional €150 million from the EBRD to modernize the country's roads. The new funding will supplement the previously provided €150 million loan for improving road infrastructure. Officials noted that the increase in aid will allow the government to modernize and expand the M2 section of the Chisinau ring road, repair the M1 Chisinau-Leuseni section leading to the Romanian border, and purchase specialized equipment for the road asset management system. The investment is part of a large-scale road rehabilitation program financed by the EBRD. Prime Minister spoke about the importance of the EBRD's financial support and expertise for the Moldovan authorities, including in terms of implementing the European agenda, carrying out reforms in key sectors, and attracting foreign investment to the country's economy. In this context, Prime Minister stressed the need to increase the capacity of state institutions to absorb funds and implement projects. The parties analyzed new opportunities for cooperation in areas such as energy, agriculture, waste management, public-private partnerships, and assistance to small and medium-sized enterprises. Currently, 67 EBRD projects with a total value of €1.1 million are being implemented in various sectors in the country, and about 24% of the EBRD's project portfolio is focused on the private sector. The EBRD is the largest institutional investor in Moldova. Over the past three years, the Bank has provided Moldova with €1.7 billion to mitigate the economic impact of the war in Ukraine on our country's economy. To date, the EBRD has invested a total of nearly €2.9 billion in 193 projects in Moldova, of which 64% of the portfolio is dedicated to infrastructure projects. // 19.12.2025 — InfoMarket.
