Moldova supports the liberalization of capital transactions with the EU, for which it needs to have a well-developed capital market, a competitive banking sector and a functional insurance industry – the NBM
Anca Dragu, Governor of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) stated this while speaking at the conference “Movers & Shakers - Today's Role Models for Tomorrow's Generation: Prospects for Moldova's European Integration”, held on September 16 in Romania. According to the National Bank, Anca Dragu said that thanks to a clear vision and concrete measures, Moldova is shaping a prosperous and solid future within the European Community. She emphasized the importance of the current moment in Moldova's European course, which is decisive for the country's future. The NBM Governor said that joining the European Union is not only a project of peace and prosperity, but also a guarantor of democracy and observance of citizens' rights. “Moldova, firmly oriented towards European values, confirms that the EU membership is essential for sustainable economic development and consolidation of a solid democracy,” the NBM head added. In her speech, Anca Dragu emphasized the decisive role played by the National Bank in the European integration process, especially thanks to its contribution in the monetary policy and supervision of the financial sector. “Monetary policy and the financial sector are key areas to ensure Moldova's compliance with two of the three main economic criteria for EU accession,” Anca Dragu explained. The head of the National Bank also highlighted the importance of the liberalization of capital operations, which implies free and unrestricted financial flows between Moldova and the European Union. “Achieving this fundamental criterion of the economic union requires a solid and efficient financial market, which includes a well-developed capital market, a competitive banking sector and a functional insurance sector,” the NBM Governor specified. She emphasized that legislative amendments are necessary and they should be complemented by investments in the financial infrastructure and development of the market's functional components, a process that may not be easy, as the experience of the EU member states shows. The ideas presented by Anca Dragu during the conference are elaborated in detail in an editorial entitled “The Path to European Integration: Prospects and Challenges for Moldova”, published in the Movers & Shakers yearbook. This publication focuses on models of excellence in the socio-economic and security sectors. The yearbook also includes a description of Anca Dragu's career in the economic, financial, banking and public sectors, as she became the first woman to hold the position of Governor of the National Bank of Moldova. The conference “Movers & Shakers - Today's Role Models for Tomorrow's Generation” was organized by the Department of Sustainable Development, the National Institute of Statistics and the MediaUno association. // 16.09.2024 - InfoMarket.
