Driving Sustainable Finance in Moldova

  •      - Sustainability strategy and roadmap. Adopted in 2023, these documents have over 60 key targets many of which are directed towards sustainable finance. One such target is to reach a 15% share of green loans in the SME and Corporate segments by 2027.
  •      - Green Portfolio. Maib’s green portfolio reached MDL 760 million as of 30.09.2024, marking a 127% increase since 2022.
  •      - Environmental impact. In 2023, maib’s green portfolio contributed to avoiding an estimated 45.2 thousand tons of CO2e emissions, equivalent to approximately 0.3% of Moldova’s total carbon footprint in 2022.
  •      - Financial inclusion. Since 2022, maib has continuously increased access to banking for Ukrainians within Moldova. The bank has done this through measures such as staff trainings, a dedicated website, and cooperation with UNHCR.

Giorgi Shagidze, maib CEO, commented:
“We are deeply honored to be recognized by Global Finance as the Best Bank for Sustainable Finance in Moldova. This reflects our commitment to advancing sustainable finance and achieving meaningful environmental impact through creative initiatives and advantageous products. I would like to thank Global Finance for this recognition and the maib team for their dedication to sustainability.”

Joseph Giarraputo, founder and editorial director of Global Finance, said:
“Sustainable finance continues to demonstrate remarkable growth. However, challenges like greenwashing, inconsistent regulatory standards, and limited data transparency remain significant barriers to fully embedding sustainability into mainstream financial systems. Global Finance’s Sustainable Finance Awards recognize financial institutions that excel in supporting a comprehensive range of initiatives essential for a sustainable future while demonstrating creativity in addressing long-term challenges.”
