MEZON project in the experts' viewfinder: a regional urban planning model that will integrate best practices and global solutions!
International Architecture and Technology Innovation Forum, SHARE Architects Chisinau 2024, took place in Chisinau recently - An event that brought together the top architects and designers from Moldova and abroad. Notable personalities from the UK, Romania, the Netherlands, Israel and Turkey discussed the latest trends and innovations in architecture. During the event, the public had the opportunity to study the "MEZON" project. This project will be realized on the territory of the former "MEZON" factory in Riscani sector and will include a modern residential complex with a well-developed infrastructure. The project covers the perimeter of the streets of Matei Basarab - Florilor - Studenților - bd. Moscow and foresees the transformation of an industrial area into a mixed zone, which will include residential functions with additional facilities and associated infrastructure (trade/office/services) as well as educational functions. Our reporter discussed about the Forum and the "MEZON" project with participants of the International Architecture and Technology Innovation Forum and got their opinion.
Iurie Povar, President of the Union of Architects of the Republic of Moldova: The SHARE Architects Forum, which took place in Chisinau in February, was in its second edition and a much awaited event by the specialized public in our country. The active and numerical participation became an important argument to give this event a traditional character. Moldovan architects possess a significant creative potential and it was proved, including at the Forum, that the presentations of our colleagues meet the high standards dictated by foreign architects. While approaching the presentation of the MEZON project, several positive moments can be highlighted:
- a deep analysis of the existing situation, crowned with a zonal urban plan elaborated by IMP "CHIŞINĂUPROIECT", which in turn offered clear solutions for all types of infrastructures: social, building, transport and communication;
- a comprehensive examination of a large territory, which is a substantial part of the Riscani sector;
- a complex approach in the architectural concept to residential, social and functional issues, including the creation of jobs for Chisinau residents.
I was impressed in concept by the variety of stylistics applied and developed for the planned constructions, the proposed urban structure, the functional micro-zoning, the attitude towards the development of the related territories, the multitude of horizontal and vertical green spaces.
Filippo Innocenty, Director UK, Zaha Hadid Architects: It was a pleasure to engage in the recent SHARE event in Chisinau, where Zaha Hadid Architects had the privilege of showcasing our innovative projects and design approach. These occasions are invaluable as they allow us to connect with the local community, gaining insights into the aspirations of the authorities and the city's developmental potential. Within the interesting content of the event, MEZON is the project that has impressed me more. I am genuinely enthusiastic about the prospects it holds for Chisinau. This initiative could serve as a beacon, introducing a contemporary solution that mirrors the development trajectories of major European capitals. The topic of requalification within the MEZON project is particularly noteworthy in today's context, offering a secure path towards sustainable urban interventions. I envision a transformative project that not only establishes itself as a city landmark but also takes a measured approach, demonstrating sensitivity to the human scale and the liveability of the site. This tailored intervention, influenced by local architectural traditions, can seamlessly weave into the rich heritage of Chisinau while making a bold contemporary statement. By aligning with the strong architectural legacy of the region, the proposed project has the potential to strike a harmonious balance between tradition and modernity. It is our belief that such an endeavour can contribute significantly to the city's cultural and architectural tapestry, setting a new standard for development that resonates with the global architectural community.
Aurelia Carpov, Architect, ex-Head of the UTM Department of Architecture: The SHARE Forum brought together the architectural community to share thoughts and exchange values and to celebrate innovation and excellence in architecture. With an ongoing mission, the SHARE Forum in its second edition in Chisinau contributed to strengthening the professional platform and promoting high quality architecture. The event provided an exceptional framework for communication in the field of architecture and demonstrated how necessary it is. First of all, I was happy to learn that there are investors who want to contribute to the development of Chisinau, making it more accessible, greener and more attractive for residents and tourists.
MEZON is an ambitious and challenging project that tested the community's thinking at the Forum. The site, with all its many differences - topographical, social, cultural and historical - creates an exciting opportunity that needs an innovative solution. In the proposed concept we valued the approach to sustainability by creating a socially, ecologically and economically sustainable architecture that will in turn ensure environmental sustainability. The most important aspect of the design of this complex is to provide a human-centered and human-scale experience. While creating quality conditions for individual citizens, it is also very important to promote the public interest. It is necessary to create a balance between what the investor wants and what the city wants, carefully considering the proportions of spaces with different uses: residential, administrative, commercial, educational and recreational, and of course providing infrastructure. I say YES to this project, because you can't do town planning by constantly saying only what not to do!
Anda Manu, founder of AMA Design in Romania: SHARE's events in many European countries are successful in bringing together a number of international speakers of exceptional professional value. It is a truly inspirational and enlightening event that architects, suppliers and investors in the country should not miss if they want to see the future models of quality architecture.
The MEZON project - is perhaps the best example that "it can be done" here in Chisinau, but the success of this project will depend very much on its implementation. It is very important for the investor to pay attention to the budgeting during the execution phases, so that towards the end he does not abandon the proposed finishes of the facades, the vegetation or the interior garden, the public lighting or everything else foreseen in the simulations of this complex. Housing density is very high, so all public spaces must be prioritized so that people love and value this small neighborhood. And I say this because, psychologically speaking, people value beauty, or vandalize a space that lacks quality. Mixed-use is already a successful model. There is no doubt that a neighborhood needs to have as many functions as possible to remain "alive" during the day, but also throughout the week. More features actually mean more services that can support a wider variety of residents' needs. And that always increases the success rate, just as shopping malls are generally successful because you find a wide variety of shops in one place. And the main advantage is that everything is within easy reach, there is always something going on or there are useful activities nearby.
Etan Kimmel, Founder of Kimmel-Eshkolot Architects, Israel: I had the pleasure to participate as a keynote speaker in the SHARE conference in Chisinau last week. As a platform of exchanging ideas it was an excellent event. It was a perfect blend between local architects from Moldova and Romania along with presentations from cutting edge companies from the building industry and with the international speakers.
The MEZON project presented during the conference stood out as a potential project that celebrates architecture and achieves at this preliminary stage of design an urban quality of a new and vibrant city center, an oasis of living and working of the highest quality. The quality of the project is achieved by the diversity of architectural solutions, mixed-use and the understanding that the open spaces in between the buildings are of great importance
I believe that such projects can bring prosperity to the entire city and can create a new bench mark for projects in Chisinau. We hope to have the opportunity to collaborate on this exciting project.
Ionuț Borta, General Manager Innovo Graph, Romania: Attending the Architects' Forum in Chișinău was a truly enriching experience. The diverse projects presented by architects from various European countries, including France, Turkey, Romania, and the Republic of Moldova, showcased remarkable innovation. Engaging in insightful exchanges and connecting with talented Moldovan architects added to the overall value of the event. The forum facilitated meaningful discussions and debates, creating a stimulating environment for professional growth and collaboration. The MEZON project in Chișinău is indeed a promising venture in urban revitalization for 2024. Its commitment to attracting the most talented architects and experienced urban planning specialists worldwide demonstrates a dedication to excellence. The primary goal of transforming semi-abandoned lands into vibrant, lively spaces sets a commendable example for responsible urban development. This initiative not only serves as a model for regional urban planning but also provides a unique opportunity to integrate the best global practices and solutions. The direct involvement of experts in shaping the architectural concept and the overall urban regeneration project reflects a commitment to creating a modern and inspired urban environment tailored to contemporary living needs and aspirations. In essence, it's a beautiful concept of urban regeneration, showcasing thoughtful and forward-looking approaches.
Sabina Gustof, Business Development Manager, ALUPROF SA, Poland: The Share Architects Forum in Chisinau 2024 left a lasting impression of innovation and collaboration. It was inspiring to see architects from diverse backgrounds coming together to exchange ideas and push the boundaries of design. The discussions were compelling, the presentations were insightful, and the networking opportunities were invaluable. Moldova, despite its small size and relatively modest economic development, presents several opportunities for architectural design in different areas including: urban renewal, residential architecture, public infrastructure etc. What is more, the country boasts very talented architects, creating inspiring projects. Overall, I'm impressed by the calibre of the Forum and opportunities offered by this market. The MEZON project in Chisinau is truly impressive, reflecting an ambitious vision to breathe new life into semi-abandoned areas of the city. It's evident that the project embodies the creativity and skill of talented architects who are adept at crafting sustainable and good living architecture. By revitalizing these spaces, MEZON not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the city but also contributes to its overall sustainability and liveability. It stands as a shining example of how thoughtful urban development can transform communities and create vibrant hubs for people to enjoy. The MEZON project appears to be a positive step towards enhancing the urban landscape and quality of life in Chisinau.
Marina Baltag, Architect, Balmarin: Such events can provide an important platform for exchanging ideas, presenting trends and innovations in architecture and related technologies. They can facilitate networking between industry professionals, creating opportunities for collaboration and partnerships. They can also contribute to raising awareness and expertise among participants through the presentation of case studies, workshops and lectures by experts in the field. Finally, such events could contribute to the advancement and development of the field of architecture and related technologies by promoting innovation and knowledge exchange.
The MEZON project represents a new, modern neighborhood with innovative architecture and the use of sustainable materials that could have several positive impacts on Chisinau:
* Improved urban aesthetics: A modern and innovative neighborhood could add a new aesthetic dimension to the city, contributing to the diversification and enrichment of the urban landscape.
* Promoting sustainability: The use of sustainable materials could reduce the carbon footprint of the neighborhood and serve as an example for green building practices throughout the city.
* Improving quality of life: A modern neighborhood could offer new and improved facilities and services, such as parks, green spaces, bike paths, restaurants and shops, which could improve the quality of life for residents and attract new residents to the city.
* Stimulating the local economy: Building and developing a new neighborhood could stimulate the local economy by creating construction jobs and supporting local businesses such as restaurants, shops and other services.
* Social integration: A new neighborhood could promote social integration by creating public spaces that facilitate interaction between residents, such as squares, parks and recreational spaces.
* Attracting foreign investment: A modern and sustainable neighborhood could attract foreign investment in real estate development and other sectors of the economy, with a positive impact on the city's economic growth.
Overall, the implementation of a new, modern and sustainable neighborhood could bring significant economic, social and environmental benefits to Chisinau.
Grigore Cebanu, Architect, Resident Construct: The Forum offered us the opportunity to exchange experience without leaving the country, we were professionally enriched at home. The MEZON concept proposes the revitalization of a practically abandoned area downtown the most expensive sector of Chisinau, Riscani. The concept has healthy goals: it proposes to preserve buildings that meet modern requirements or can be adapted to these requirements, and to build other modern blocks with the implementation of urban technologies for a decent living.
