Maib at Fintech Conference Moldova 2021: Innovative banking and smart city for Chisinau

About next level banking, the digital transformation of business, the development of the smart city concept and what it is like to exceed customer expectations - these were the main topics of discussion at Fintech Moldova Conference 2021, the most important annual event dedicated to this industry.

The third edition was attended by important speakers from the financial, banking, IT sector, leaders of successful start-ups, as well as investors from the country and abroad. At the beginning of the event, Giorgi Shagidze, president of maib, addressed a message of encouragement and support to the fintech sector and professionals in this industry.

Giorgi Shagidze, maib CEO:
”As many have probably already realized, the fintech field is certainly the future of the financial industry, including the banking sector. For us, at maib, it is important to identify the best companies in the field of fintech in order to establish strategic partnerships in the next year, to develop and support IT initiatives and start-ups. We are happy to be part of this important event for the development of which we will continue to provide support, together with our reliable partner Mastercard”.

The pandemic has stimulated the digital transformation of maib, so that today, the bank’s customers have access to online deposits, just as they can open accounts and cards just a click away. In the last 3 months, including loans can be approved in just a few hours online. Every day, over 267,000 customers are active in the maibank application, and more than half of them make all payments exclusively online.

Aliona Stratan, First Vice President Maib
”Today, the barriers between industries have been practically leveled. Banks no longer compete only with banks. Customers are increasingly aspiring to be free, to have access to finance from anywhere and anytime, with growing expectations of everything digital means. Within maib, customer focus has become a business philosophy. At every contact with the client, we choose what is best for him at that moment. At the same time, we have developed an ecosystem around it- the maibank mobile application, simple and modern banking products, online sales, a new CRM system launched in 2020, the Contact Center service, electronic scheduling of the branch visit, self-service terminals, additional services at ATM and many other facilities that allow us to make the customer experience more unique and valuable”.

The digitization projects developed by maib go beyond the bank’s borders. In March 2021, maib, Mastercard and Chisinau City Hall launched a new payment solution in the capital- the pilot project for card payment in public transport, an initiative developed in support of the smart city concept.

Dionisie Comerzan, Project Manager at maib:
”Since the beginning of the project, in the trolleybuses on routes 22,23,24 and 30 were registered over 203.3 thousand card transactions, and in the buses on routes 2 and 5-over 43.5 thousand. In the future, we plan to install validators in the transport units, and the tax collectors to take over the function of controllers. This will allow the payment to be made individually by the passengers, and they will receive the ticket electronically in the mobile application, by SMS notification, chat box or in the bank statement.

Currently, we are involved in another project that aims to install turnstiles at the entrance to parks, museums, parking lots and cultural events. These will allow instant payment for access, without the involvement of the human factor. Smart city for maib also means the possibility of payment through FacePay, the payment used in several countries around the world, which we will implement and which will allow payment using individual biometric data of each person, without the need for it to physically use your bank card or telephone”.

Fintech Moldova Conference 2021 was held with the support of maib and Mastercard, implemented by Fintech Moldova and Start-up Moldova and supported by the United States Agency for International Development and Sweden, within the TEKWILL Project.

Maib is the largest bank in Moldova, with a share of 34% of loans and 31% of deposits of the entire banking system. It has the most downloaded and best rated mobile application in the banking segment. Maib is the largest acceptor of cards in all areas of business: POS terminals, ATMs, e-commerce, self-service terminals. Through its extensive network, the bank serves approximately one million customers, individuals, SMEs and corporate customers. In 2021, for the second consecutive year, maib obtained the title “Best Digital Bank Moldova”, offered by the Global Banking and Finance Review.
