Moldova will be more actively promoted as a tourist destination and provide tourist services according to international standards

This is stipulated by a package of amendments to the Law on the organization and development of tourism activity, which was approved by the government in order to modernize the legal framework for the organization and development of tourism activity. They are planned to ensure the promotion of the country as a tourist destination, as well as to guarantee the harmonization of the legal framework in the tourism sector to international standards. In particular, the new provisions cancel outdated terms: “tourist register”, “tourist zone resident”, as well as the chapter “National tourist zones”. At the same time, a new definition of the following concepts is given: “tourist destination”, ‘tourist guide’, ‘tourist information index and sign’, including in accordance with the dictionary of terms used in this field at the international level, developed by the World Tourism Organization. Also, the amendments empower the Ministry of Culture to develop and approve regulations concerning the mechanism of grant financing of projects developed by non-profit organizations in the field of tourism, methodological norms for the development of national tourist routes, regulations on tourist inventory, methodological rules on information signs and tourist orientation, as well as regulations on the organization and activities of tourist information offices and centers. The National Tourism Office, a public institution under the Ministry of Culture, was created last year to support the development of the tourism sector in our country. According to Culture Minister Sergiu Prodan, the revenues from the tourism activity last year exceeded 1.7 times the indicators of the pre-pandemic year 2019. At the end of 2023, there were more than 300 tourist reception structures in Moldova, with a capacity of about 8,700 accommodations. The number of tourist guesthouses and agri-boarding houses increased significantly, from 43 in 2021 to 56 in 2023, which is an encouraging indicator of the development of an active social life and the expansion of workforce opportunities in the territories. // 12.09.2024 – InfoMarket
