In Moldova, food labels will contain more detailed information about their contents.
In particular, this is provided for by the relevant amendments to the Law on informing consumers about food products, which the Parliament adopted in the second reading. The document contains new measures to protect the rights of consumers so that they have more information about the composition of food products. The legislative initiative developed by the Ministry of Agriculture is aimed at creating a regulatory framework that meets international standards and is designed to protect the health of consumers and guarantee their right to receive complete, reliable and transparent food information. The bill states that product labels must contain information about the presence of allergens, as well as the presence or absence of gluten in food. Also, if the country of origin or place of origin of the primary ingredient is not the country of origin or place of origin of the food, then the country of origin or place of origin of the primary ingredient(s) should be indicated; or a region or any other geographical area of a state well understood by the consumer. It is also stipulated that poultry/pork meat, meat products or meat products from poultry/pork meat containing more than 50% of meat originating from animals that have not been fed genetically modified feeds, as well as food eggs, must be accompanied by the label “Fed without genetically modified organisms” ” or “Fed without GMOs.” In addition, as part of the second reading of the bill, provisions from another legislative initiative were incorporated into it, providing for stricter regulation of the labeling of foods containing trans fatty acids. At the suggestion of the Agriculture and Food Industry Commission, these two bills, after being approved in the first reading, were combined in the second reading into one bill, given that amendments are being made to one Food Information Consumer Law.//27.04.2023 — InfoMarket.
