Moldova's Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization has initiated the drafting of a government resolution on the collection and exchange of data regarding short-term housing rentals through online platforms. The ministry explained that individuals and legal entities planning to rent out an apartment, house, or individual room through online platforms will be required to register each property in a special registry or database by submitting an online declaration and the required documents. After registration, each property will be assigned a unique code, which the owner must include when posting an ad. Online platforms, regardless of their country of registration, will be required to request this code when a listing is published and to submit aggregated data on each property to the competent authority on a monthly basis. The reports will include the number of guests, their countries of permanent residence, the number of overnight stays, and other information specified in the regulations. The new rules will not apply to hotels, guesthouses, campgrounds, and other facilities classified under CAEM codes 55.10–55.30. The collected data will be used by central and local public authorities to inform public policy in various areas, such as tourism, infrastructure (including roads), housing construction, and so on. The goal of the project is to develop mechanisms for transposing the European regulation on the collection and exchange of data related to short-term housing rental services into national law and for its implementation.
