Energy and Resources
Low water levels in the Danube prompted the controlled shutdown of both units at Romania's Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, temporarily taking about 1,400 MW of capacity out of the regional system. Moldova is not facing restrictions, but the Ministry of Energy warns of a risk of higher regional prices; for July 30, Energocom purchased 9,794 MWh, of which 51.18% came under bilateral import contracts and 12.44% from Romania's day-ahead market.
Romania is ready to supply the volumes of petroleum products needed by Moldova amid dwindling diesel fuel stocks, logistical difficulties and low Danube water levels. Chișinău and Bucharest are also advancing two new 400-kV power lines — Suceava–Bălți and Gutinaș–Strășeni.
By the end of 2026, ANRE plans to launch an online gas price comparison service for residential and small consumers. Romania's Romgaz and Bulgaria's Bulgargaz have already entered the market, and switching suppliers will be simplified.
External Economy and Trade
Food exports rose by 21.3% in January–May, to 317.9 million euros, while imports increased by 0.8%, to 508.6 million euros. Exports of grains and grain-based products grew by 44.1%, to 145.5 million euros, and fruit and vegetable exports by 10.1%, to 129.5 million euros.
Government Regulation
Following the mass appraisal of about 6.5 million real estate properties, 7,429 objections were submitted; consultations end on July 31. New cadastral values will apply from January 1, 2027; apartment market values have risen by an average of 2.9 times since 2004, while property tax rates will be set by local councils.
Starting March 1, 2027, Moldova will introduce a national tobacco-product traceability system. Unique secure codes on packages will make it possible to track production, storage, transport and product routes throughout the supply chain.
International Relations
Moldova and Romania agreed to accelerate transport and energy projects. The road bridge across the Prut River at Ungheni is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026; SAFE funding provides for a link to the A8 motorway and infrastructure works in Moldova, including the first European-standard motorway section.
Investments and Projects
An interagency group has begun coordinating Moldova HiTech Park, including access infrastructure and the financing mechanism for the first tranche of a sovereign loan. The 50-hectare project is estimated at 200 million euros and envisages at least 21,600 jobs; the EBRD is considering financing the first phase.
Banking and Finance
A draft financial-institution resolution reform extends the regime to investment companies and holding companies, for which a separate CNPF-managed fund will be created. Full compliance with MREL requirements is scheduled by December 31, 2035; after EU accession, but no earlier than 2034, the bank resolution fund's target level will fall from 3% to 1% of covered deposits.
The NBM's switch to the euro as its reference currency reduced the average EUR/MDL spread from 21 bani in 2024 to 16 bani in January 2025–June 2026. Estimated savings for citizens and companies on foreign exchange transactions totaled 21.8 million euros.
A first-instance court sentenced the former head of Banca de Economii and members of its Credit Committee to prison terms ranging from 5 to 13 years and ordered them to jointly pay more than 1.6 billion lei to the bank. The ruling may be appealed; investigators estimated the damage at about 3 billion lei.
Agriculture
Parliament ratified a 150 million euro concessional EIB loan for the "Fruit Garden of Moldova II" project through 2031. About 135 million euros will be provided through financial intermediaries to agricultural MSMEs and another 15 million euros will go to public infrastructure; with co-financing, more than 300 million euros in investment is expected.
Business and Companies
Coca-Cola HBC Moldova increased sales by 8% in 2025, to 1.1 billion lei, and net profit by 10.2%, to 213 million lei. The company's assets grew by 7%, to 519.37 million lei.
Orange Moldova's revenue rose by 6% in the first half of 2026, to 88 million euros, from 83 million euros a year earlier. Second-quarter revenue totaled 45 million euros.
